About Gears Lab
The Global Environmental Analysis and Remote Sensing (GEARS) Laboratory was founded by Dr. Jonathan Greenberg in 2012. Dr. Greenberg earned his PhD in Ecology at the University of California, Davis in 2004 under the guidance of Dr. Susan Ustin. The lab name "GEARS" is an homage to Dr. Ustin's lab, "CSTARS". After graduating, Dr. Greenberg became a Postdoctoral Researcher at the NASA Ames Research Center working with Dr. Vern Vanderbilt, and then returned to work with Dr. Ustin at UC Davis for a second postdoc in 2007. In 2012, Dr. Greenberg became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
In 2016, Dr. Greenberg was offered a position as the Randall Endowed Professor and Associate Professor of Remote Sensing at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in the department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES), where he now resides. Dr. Greenberg earned his tenure in 2019 and is currently the Chair of the UNR Cyberinfrastructure Committee.
GEARS Lab's mission is to leverage remote sensing and other geospatial technologies to advance basic and applied science questions concerning the impacts of anthropogenic climate change on terrestrial ecosystems. Members of our lab shares a commitment to open data and open source standards, work closely with land managers, and push geospatial technologies to the cutting edge through the development of advanced algorithms and scaling our work using high performance supercomputing.
Dr. Greenberg's endowment was established by Mr. Frank Randall, UNR class of '56 (Business Administration), who served on the Foundation Board of Trustees from 2001-06. Frank and his wife, Joan, established this professorship to encourage and support professors who work to preserve and steward the environment and its natural resources.
